A Re-Introduction

Postby Kokon Tozai » Wed Sep 17, 2014 7:48 am

A few weeks ago I decided to check my profile info. It was so generic that there was no need to update it. But it refreshed my memory that today on September 17th 2004 I became an official member of ASK-C. Yup that means I am now celebrating my 20th Anniversary with the circle!

Oh no. I mean ten. Ten years.
十周年 Jū-shūnen
Hai!

And ten years ago last April I wandered into the Music Exchange in Westport & took a chance buying a couple of crazy looking Laserdisc’s that had to do with Japanese pop music. So green I bought ‘em just cuz I liked the cover photography. Then one listen I was hooked till death do us part. I learned that Chisato Moritaka was called “the first cosplay idol in music”. What was cosplay? I found out. What is Anime? I found out. About five months of me trying to turn mundane friends on to this creativity left me realizing I must find other people who already know the fun. A search on Alta Vista turned up the original version of this forum and soon I joined up. My introduction was dutifully posted a couple of weeks later & my first reply was from Wiggle:

Welcome, Mr. Tozai! ^^ Glad you made it onto the board. You might be the most chronologically blessed "newbie," but we are a pretty varied group so don't worry. :) Hope you can make it to one of our gatherings.

I did. Great first memories was meeting with Bakamatt at a BBQ joint ( I didn’t know he disliked fatty red meat smoked in carcinogens) & then a really cool meet up with Matt & Rita for a haunted house in the West Bottoms. An awesome Christmas meet up at Wiggles. About that same time (or was it the next year?) Matt informed me that he had found an Anime club at KU & they were having a club meeting focused on Christmas Anime. It was a long day at work, dark by that time & snowing. Of course I went. It was a bunch of hilarious & heartwarming anime episodes. And we met Kaworu5/Bryan & Christina for the first time. The latter is ancient history but Bryan went on to be the driving force of Naka-Kon! I bow low & long to him for all he has brought of Anime to our area. A few months after that Zeroryoko74/Shawn & I attended the first ever Naka-Kon . Bishie, Josh, The Joker, Aldric, ca_jas and even Every Name Taken. To all of you newbies who post an intro & disappear I must say your are missing out on a lot. There are a gazzilion anime forums out there but if you live in the KC metro area there’s nothing like enjoying anime in real time with real friends.

It’s been an interesting decade. In that time span my daughters graduated high school; graduated college got married & had kids of their own. The two older granddaughters (~ 4.5 years ) have a fondness for Wallace & Gromit and also J pop music videos. I am a lucky lucky man. I went to Hawaii for the first time. My job changed from photography to photo-medical. When I joined the forum we had a miniature Dachshund (registered AKC name) Cleopatra X Bebop Lateef. We only used her full name when she was in trouble otherwise just Cleo. A wonderful pup with personality plus she was like the little black four legged son I never had but always wanted. After 13 years she left us quite unexpectedly. Waiting in the wings was her under study Maddie the Beagle. With us today she is the best late night anime watching buddy I’ve ever had. Remember to always rub a Beagle’s belly if you get the chance it is good fortune. In 2012 my car got totaled in a powerful rear end collision that should have at least crippled me. Two days later I was shoveling snow. The forum helped me pick out a new car! A cool little Mazda 3. And I beat prostate cancer. So far.

Technologically the first gathering of ASK-C in my Bassment was on a 46” Mitsubishi CRT RPTV with analog surround audio. Now I have a Panasonic HD projector with an 8’ screen and an Anthem surround sound digital processor. Because of Anime & J Pop I was motivated to build my first PC. I did this so I could copy Laserdiscs & upmix stereo into Surround Sound. It was a Gigabyte/P4 combo with a whopping 1 gig of this new DDR RAM. I liked that I had C drive in RAID 0 and another HDD for data. Radical for the time. I am now on my 3rd+ build with an Asus/i7-3770k, an Intensity Black Magic Vid Cap card, Delta 1010 audio, 32gig’s of DDR 3, and 7 HDD. Sort of. Two are SSD’s RAID 0 for C drive. Two more pairs are RAID 0 Seagate data drives. A third individual Seagate HDD is for archiving & storage. A rather High End Radeon card outputs 1080p via HDMI straight into my projector. The set up does pretty much everything I need it to. Not bragging just thinking what I started off to what I have now. All for Anime, movies, music & sharing with friends. And when I joined I didn"t even have a cell phone. And now, well, I do. And shamefully I ‘m as addicted to the connectivity as most everyone else.

I’ve watched a bit of Anime tho probably not as much as you. My very first purchase took me to Suncoast where I bought an OST for “X” and “Neon Genesis Evangelion.” As I listened to the music, a kid growing up on Disney & Hanna Barberra, I could not possibly believe that this music belonged to Japanese cartoons! Blew me away. My next visit to Suncoast had me buying Perfect Blue & the first vol of Comic Party & Neon Genesis Evangelion. This was a great match that was both opposite polarity yet so complimentary. Viewing in dissonant pairs is still my favorite way to watch today.
And for those that know me well & have heard too many times how I discovered the path I walked down, I apologize. At least if there is ever a Kokon Tozai Trivia game (it would be very trivial) at a meet up you will be well versed.

For you newbies that might read this you might like to know that this forum is actually in its third generation. Originally started by Kenshin138 the boards did well until some kinda spam/hacker virus took it over. Barely it was rescued by Logtar/John. He did a great job of reorganizing things but quickly lost interest. Passionate people soon get passionate about something else. Then Tsunami3k/Tim walked in & reanimated it (heh) it with a PHP upgrade & has nurtured it & wrote the checks ever since. Many things originate from Tim’s Enchanted Keep such as the annual forum anniversary party, before & after’s for the Japanese Festival and a regular weekly Anime viewing. Pretty cool. His cosplay & PVC figure photography is awesome. Tim might not be the longest of my forum friends but one of the best & always will be. Thanks Tim for all you do. If it wasn’t for you I’d have to join facetweet or Livebog to spout off this way.
Oh man but what about this! Septmber 17th 2014 is also the official date of the reissue of Chisato Moritaka’s Kokon Tozai live concert on Blu-rei!

This was one of the first two LD’s I bought that got me started on this. It was meant to be. BTW, Kokon Tozai can be translated as East meets West/old meets new. Or all times/all places. Seems appropriate as my club name.

Altho I’ve said a lot about myself what I want to say is Domo Aragato ASK-C for all the good times. I am far from the most prolific poster (and never will be.) But the forum that was started so many years ago & thrives today is just incredible.
Yatta, banzai & campai! To another twenty! I mean ten!

Scott, I think a re-introduction is a pretty neat idea.

While you are the oldest among us, you might well be the youngest at heart. For all that you seem to have the curse of getting way into things that no one else shares, your good nature and enthusiasm remains a genuine joy to me.

My belief is that fans are discovered, not created. You occupy the, to me, unique posiiton of having not discovered you were fannish until after age 50 - God only knows what you'd have gotten up to if you'd discovered it age 20, so maybe it's just as well.

I can't say I remember the Christmas episode screening at KU anime (which still exists, by the way, though I haven't been in years), but I do remember the haunted house trip, and suddenly realizing after waiting fifteen minutes in the American Bandstand restaurant that you might be in the KC Masterpiece instead. Right from the start, you laughed off the confusion and we had a fine visit.

And let's not forget the immersive, real-world special effects equipped Scott-O-Vision screenings in your basement. I'll treasure that little radio-controlled truck busting out of its garage during Big Trouble in Little China forever.

If only you were a gamer...

So, as you say, here's to another 20, um, 10 years.

(For the benefit of the recently-joined, this "20 year/10 year" thing is a reference to the T-shirts Scott had made for the 10th anniversary party that by error calls it the 20th anniversary. Featuring cute art by our own jas.)

I love the re-intro idea Scott! I hadn't expected such a sentimental post out of the blue like that but it was definitely a pleasant surprise. I'm glad to have contributed where I can and, although there's lots more I could do, thank you for the generous characterization; I also consider you a great friend. BFFs!!!! I always figured I got more from the club than I've given but I suppose that's the neat "sum is greater than its parts" magic of everything from clubs to city-states; it's a sweet synergistic coincidence that this also afforded you the chance to dodge the Pinstagrapp bullet but I fear this may have robbed you of the chance to amass scores of fake friends. Keep keepin' it real man!

Anyway, happy 20th! You've set the bar high for future re-intros but thankfully I'm still enough of a noob that it's still some years away for me yet.

Wow, that was a great recap! For some reason your connection to Chisato Moritaka always fascinates me. I'm living in China now so you may have to send me a few choice tunes to tide me over!

Long ago it was Scott's house where I was first invited to an anime viewing (not counting the anime 101 classes). Even though I couldn't make it, the invitation was so welcoming that when it was Tim's turn to host one of the anniversary parties I did everything I could to join so I could get to know everyone better. When I return from China in the summer I really hope we can have another viewing session! Dark Star was a blast!

Wow Jas! I knew you had been talking about it for a while but I had no idea you had already done it! Bravo man, I hope it's every bit the adventure you were expecting. So I guess we won't see you at the JFest this year. ;D

Sorry for the delayed response but guys, thanks for the warm replies!
And jas I'd been missing you on the forums & now I know why. Incredible. Where are you posting pics or blogging? Maybe just facebook? Let us know.

So ok I have a question for you jas. Is there porn in China? Or are things so tightly controlled that porn is actually non-existent? If there is porn do the pixelate the good parts? Is it always straight porn? Where do you buy porn? Assuming there is such a thing as porn in China. And of course do they scan e mail & internet forums for the word porn?

That's a very, very relevant question lol! Basically any foreigner who has plans to use the internet in China should purchase a vpn. It's a service that encrypts your signal and sends it to a server outside of China, like Hong Kong or Japan. So I've been able to access sites with not much trouble in that regards. Otherwise without a vpn I think only gravure stuff is accessible. Prostitution and "massages" are also legal-ish here (illegal but cops don't even bother with it). About buying hard copy materials, I don't know. I can't even find music or movies or books for that matter. With all the piracy I guess brick and mortar shops are completely pointless. However if you need women's shoe, this is the mecha of shoe shops haha.

Here's where I'm posting pictures and stories. http://chinajas.tumblr.com/
