new to anime - wsm2010

Postby wsm2010 » Tue Jun 08, 2010 11:14 am

Hello anybody/everybody.
I'm fairly new to the culture of anime and manga. Not many people I know are fans themselves, so I thought I'd check this place out.
I myself am an artist. I have traditional art training, but am finding myself more interested in anime and manga.
I am interested to find out more, but so far have been pretty choosy when it comes to what I like and watch/read.
Still have not seen a lot, tend to be more interested in the more adult, darker stories my favorites so far I know, include Junji Ito, Higurashi, Elfen Lied, FLCL, Gantz, Haruhi Suzimiya,
Also a big fan of JHorror and other Asian movies, Lady Snowblood, Battle Royale, Ringu, Takashi Miike, Kiyoshi Kurasawa, Shinya Tsukamoto, Chan Wook Park, etc
I'd welcome any suggestions, which is a big reason I signed up for this site.
Thanks

Dark anime: Berserk, Bastard, Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne, Umineko (same universe as Higurashi, kind of a train wreck of logic towards the end), Serial Expirements Lain, Boogiepop Phantom, Haibene Reinme (not so much dark, but kind of cerebral), Gantz (ending sucks though), Grave of the Fireflies (may want to have tissues handy, very sad story), Curse of the Undead Youma, Ninja Scroll
other recomdations: Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke
Live action films: Machine Girl, 2LDK, Audition, Ichi, Zatoichi, Ichi the Killer, Tokyo Gore Police, Feast trilogy (not Japanese, but F'd up beyond words)

Hi there wsm2010. Welcome to the forums. It looks like your interests overlap pretty heavily with lots of people here. I think you'll feel right at home.

I'll have to dream up some darker titles after I'm done marveling at Zero's amazing ?berlist.

I don't know of a more "adult, dark" story than Gunslinger Girl; though it's certainly not traditional horror, it's equally certainly horrific.

I'll second Haibane Renmei, as well.

Since I'm new here to ASK-C, I'm also wondering what people are up to, if and when there are meetings, showings etc?

I have not heard of anything, but I think the ASK-C anniversary is coming in like July.
